We’ve already reported that Hyundai will be turning up the wick on its Elantra small sedan by slotting in the Veloster SR Turbo's turbo 1.6 litre, but while that car won’t be arriving on our shores until the second half of 2016 we can still take a look at what to expect in its Korean market equivalent, the Avante Sport.

Making its debut in Korea this week, the Hyundai Avante Sport (which will be sold in other markets as the Elantra Sport, and in Australia as the Elantra SR), features a direct-injected 1.6 litre turbo inline four with 152kW and 265Nm, as well as body mods with a distinctly sporty flavour.

And, like the Veloster, the Avante Sport is available with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed twin clutch automatic.. As yet, it’s not clear whether Australian-delivered Elantra SRs will be available with both transmissions.

Hyundai has swapped out the base Elantra’s rear torsion beam suspension for a more sophisticated multi-link arrangement to aid handling, with the Avante Sport’s ride height also dropping by 18mm.

An optional “Extreme Selection” performance package is available, and adds a rear spoiler, thicker swaybars and a different set of 18-inch lightweight alloys.

Braking hardware has been upgraded to deal with the extra power, the exhaust system is unique (and features a pair of chrome outlets), and the bodykit is restyled with more prominent venting and the latest version of Hyundai’s corporate “face”.

A subtle 'Turbo' badge also peeks through the grille as a reminder of what's under the bonnet.

Headlamp and taillamp details have been updated too, while inside the seats are unique to the Avante Sport and feature deeper bolsters, with alloy pedals, faux carbon trim and a flat-bottomed steering wheel finishing off the interior.

While precise local specifications and pricing have yet to be announced, it’s expected that the Australian Elantra SR will be largely identical to the Avante Sport.

However, with Hyundai Australia’s policy of applying a locally-tuned suspension calibration to every new model, we can expect the Elantra SR to ride differently to its overseas-market cousins.

A local launch date has yet to be confirmed, but Hyundai Australia says the Elantra SR will enter the range sometime in the second half of 2016. Stay tuned for more info about Hyundai’s upcoming entry-level sports sedan.
