PSA Peugeot Citroen has taken the wraps off its next-generation large van, wearing the Expert badge for Peugeot and the Jumpy badge for Citroen (formerly Dispatch in Australia).

Perched upon the carmaker’s EMP2 platform, both models are set to arrive in European showrooms from the middle of this year.

As is the norm with European load-carriers, there’s no shortage of combinations for van length, engine, transmission and trim levels.

Three lengths are available, ranging from 4.6 to 5.3 metres, and the new model can carry up to 1400kg.

Height is now 1900mm, down from 1942mm in some models, and weight has been trimmed by up to 150kg, depending on the engine.

Power will come from a choice of up to five diesel engines, ranging in output from 71kW to 134kW, matched with manual and automatic transmissions.

PSA says the new model is the safest in its class, and Euro NCAP has awarded it the maximum 5-star safety rating.

The Dispatch and the Expert also wear Toyota badges (as the ProAce) in some markets, but none of the trio is sold in Australia at present.

Local stocks of the Peugeot Expert and the smaller Partner van dried up last year, but PSA’s local distributor, Sime Darby, is considering the Dispatch, Expert and Partner as part of an all-encompassing review of its commercial vehicle line-up.

Speaking with TMR, Sime Darby’s Tyson Bowen said the carmaker would not be rushed into a decision and that balancing the overall range, including passenger models, with Citroen and Peugeot working side-by-side was important.

General manager of Peugeot, Citroen and DS Australia, Kai Bruesewitz, added that the range could be welcomed locally with its strong list of features.

“Introduction of the next-generation Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch are currently under study with PSA Peugeot Citroen, with these models part of a wider review of the PSA commercial vehicle portfolio in Australia,” Mr Bruesewitz said.

“Both Peugeot and Citroen models bring with them significant level of innovation, specification and safety to the market; and if the business case is strong we believe the all-new light commercial would be a welcome addition to the Australian line-up.”

For now, Citroen’s Berlingo continues to chalk up sales in the Australian small van market, with sales up 77 percent year-to-date at the end of February.
