Skoda’s new SUV could serve as more than just an ‘A-to-B’ family truckster when it enters production, with reports out of Europe pointing to at least three future variants.

Company chief Bernhard Maier is reportedly keen to see the new model cover as many SUV bases as possible, including the emerging trend in Europe and elsewhere for ‘four-door coupe’ versions.

Maier also hinted that once the regular and coupe models are established, a powered-up RS version could also arrive in showrooms over the next few years.

“We’ve seen for some time that the SUV segment has experienced the strongest growth in the market”, Skoda CEO, Bernhard Maier said, speaking with the UK’s Autocar.

“We might imagine there will be further models”.

Mr Maier said the new model, believed to be called “Kodiak” or “Kodiaq”, will launch in Europe during the northern autumn, hinting at a production debut for the Paris Motor Show.

The company boss said demand for the Yeti was one factor that pushed Skoda into the large SUV market, while customer feedback was another.

To that end, the next-generation Yeti could grow in size and be ‘de-styled’ to more closely reflect the look of its compact SUV rivals.

Styling for the Kodiak will likely be based heavily on the VisionS concept (pictured) from last month’s Geneva Motor Show, and the VisionS’s plug-in hybrid powerplant also points to a PHEV or even an all-electric version in the road-going model at some stage.

Internal combustion power is expected to be borrowed at least in part from the Superb range, and internal accommodation for passengers is expected to be a seven-seat layout.

For Australia, Skoda has already confirmed the new model will be built in right-hand-drive, and the local thirst for SUV models shows no signs of abating.

However, the Volkswagen Group may decide that the Touareg and Audi Q7 models from neighbouring stables already serve this segment of the market in Australia, meaning Skoda’s new model will not make a local debut.
