Subaru has let loose the first details of its all-new modular platform architecture, which will underpin all of the Japanese automaker's new models starting with the next-generation Subaru Impreza range that's set to arrive in the fourth quarter of this year.

Unimaginatively dubbed the "Subaru Global Platform", the new architecture is scalable and able to underpin everything from a small or C-segment hatchback to a large three-row SUV. It also allows space for hybrid, plug-in hybrid electric or "other types" of alternative powertrains.

But while the Subaru Global Platform has one eye firmly on a greener future, Subaru traditionalists can breathe easy - boxer engines will still fit, as will an AWD driveline.

The new platform also brings safety and performance benefits in the form of greater torsional rigidity thanks to improved engineering and greater use of high-tensile steel. - as much as 70 percent more stiffness than current models, especially in suspension mounting areas.

Crash energy absorption is said to be improved by 40 percent, and with a 5mm lower centre of gravity Subaru claims cars using the new platform could feature a reduction in body roll of as much as 50 percent.

And, like most other scalable architectures like Toyota's TNGA or Volkswagen's MQB, the Subaru Global platform will allow greater economies of scale by increasing the number of common components between models and help streamline the production process - a key consideration for Subaru, due to its relatively low number of assembly plants.

The all-new Subaru Impreza will be the first model to be built on the Subaru Global Platform, with a local launch scheduled for the last quarter of 2016.
