Shrugging off the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal, Volkswagen will be pleased to get the focus back on new products at the Geneva Motor Show and surprised all by wheeling-out the attractively-styled T-Cross Breeze compact SUV convertible.

A vehicle like this would give Volkswagen some firepower to tackle the just-launched Range Rover Evoque drop-top.

In fact, the T-Cross Breeze could be seen as a preview to a range of all-new compact SUVs – like the similar T-ROC concept - the German giant has under development to take-on the likes of the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

And if you ignore the less-than-practical convertible bodystyle, the concept T-Cross Breeze shown in Geneva did, in the usual Volkswagen way, look ready for production.

However, you can likely discount the four-seater SUV’s 19-inch alloys, not to mention its adventurous interior that employs four touchscreens to render normal buttons, dials and gauges obsolete.

In fact, despite its production-ready level of finish don't hold your breath for a convertible VW SUV just yet. According to Herbert Diess, board member of Volkswagen AG, the T-Cross Breeze is "purely a concept".

However we wouldn’t rule-out the narrow headlights and grille – both departures from the current Volkswagen styling guide - finding their way into a future model. Given its size, it could arrive as a sub-Tiguan crossover hatch to duke it out with the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V in the burgeoning compact SUV segment.

And in that role it'd be no surprise to see the T-Cross Breeze's 1.0 litre turbo triple, twin-clutch transmission and FWD driveline see service - after all, its 81kW/175Nm outputs are already in line with many cars already in the segment.
