There may have been little left still to be revealed of the 2017 Volvo V90, thanks to an on-going series of leaks, however Volvo has now - finally - officially revealed its new large wagon.

Twinned with the S90 sedan from the B-pillar forward, the V90 is the third vehicle to be built off Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture, first seen beneath the XC90.

Like the two cars that precede it, the V90 will be powered by a range of Drive-E 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines, with a 187kW/350Nm T5 petrol and 140kW/400Nm D4 diesel matched with front wheel drive.

Further along the range a 173kW/480Nm D5 diesel and 235kW/400Nm T6 twincharged petrol engine are paired with all wheel drive, while at the top of the range a further 65kW/240Nm electric motor driving the rear axle pairs with the T6 engine to become the T8.

As you would expect from Volvo, safety is a top priority, with the V90 featuring Pilot Assist II semi-autonomous technology. This allows the V90 to take control of acceleration, steering, and braking at speeds of up to 130km/h and no longer needs to follow a lead car, unlike earlier versions of Pilot Assist.

Volvo City Safety, a monitoring system capable of detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals, linked to autonomous braking is also included.

Operating at speeds up to 70km/h City Safety can monitor multiple moving objects, and is able to stop the vehicle at lower speeds, or reduce the severity of an impact, as well as pretensioning the seatbelts for greater occupant protection.

But that’s not all, lane keeping aid, driver alert control, road sign information, run-off-road mitigation and run-off-road protection, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and a speed limiter are also standard.

On the inside the V90 shares its interior design with the S90, including the large Sensus touchscreen display, and leather-lined five-seat interior, with an emphasis placed on high end materials, including available open-pore wood trims, and Bowers & Wilkins audio.

Size-wise the V90 offers a 4936mm overall length and rides on a 2941mm wheelbase, both dimensions outstrecth those of the current Mercedes-Benz E-class wagon, while height is just 1mm different.

Despite the use of 35 percent high-strength steel in its construction, the V90 is no lightweight with kerb weight between 1825 and 2100kg, making it slightly heavier across the board than the E-class estate.

Set to go into production in Europe later this year, the V90 will most likely arrive in Australia early in 2017 with Volvo Australia yet to confirm final pricing and specification.
