BMW has confirmed pricing for its X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid SUV, which is due to launch in May with a $118,900 price tag that will make it just $2000 more expensive than the existing diesel-powered X5 xDrive40d.
As TMR reported earlier this week, BMW Australia's strategy of minimising the premium required to step up into the "eDrive" plug-in variants of its mainstream models should see more buyers opt for the ultra-thrifty cars - the X5 xDrive40e being one, the BMW 330e being the other.
Though BMW is holding its precise sales targets close to its chest, BMW Australia product manager Brendan Michel told TMR it's hoped the X5 xDrive40e will sell in similar numbers to the similarly-priced diesel-engined X5 xDrive40d - a car which sold around 300-400 units last year.
The X5 40e will share much of its standard equipment list with the 40d, except with the unique advantage of being able to run without consuming a drop of fuel.
With a full charge in its 9kWh lithium ion battery pack, the X5 40e can travel for up to 31km without firing up its 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine - more than enough distance for the average Australian's commute.
The battery pack can be fully recharged within four hours on a regular 10-amp household power outlet, which means most owners could conceivably drive to and from work every day without requiring any petrol whatsoever.
Total system output measures 230kW and 450Nm when both combustion engine and electric motor are working together, but in electric-only mode there's a more modest 83kW and 250Nm of torque coming from the 40e's electric drive motor.
The petrol engine will only fire up if the battery becomes depleted, heavy throttle inputs are made by the driver or speed exceeds 70km/h. Driven gently the 40e will stay in all-electric mode up until 70km/h, but push the eDrive button and the car will stay locked in EV mode until 120km/h.
BMW claims a combined fuel consumption figure of just 3.1 l/100km - assuming the petrol engine is regularly used during driving. Keep the batteries topped up and make liberal use of eDrive mode, and 0.0 l/100km is possible.
The cabin is mostly the same as a regular X5, except with two compromises thanks to the hybrid drivetrain.
Because the high voltage battery lives beneath the boot floor, the floor height is raised by 40mm and eats into luggage capacity slightly, and there's no seven-seat capability on the 40e.
