Opel has released a short video to kick off its teaser campaign for a new GT concept, ahead of an official debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

It is nearly 50 years since the appearance of the first Opel GT - a delectable, and now very collectable, slippery two-door coupe - which remains, arguably, its only 'real' GT sports car, the GT Roadster of 2007-10 was the Saturn Sky with an Opel badge, take a look at the two side-by-side, above.

Until now... maybe.

With this 'rebirth', the carmaker certainly isn’t giving much away, but the new GT badge features along with a message from Opel CEO Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann himself.

“Take a look at Opel with a fresh pair of eyes,” Neumann says.

Opel refers to the concept as a “major step”, and it’s fair to say the GT will be more than just a casual project concocted by the design team in its spare time…

This car potentially signals the introduction of a new design language for the Euro carmaker, along with a preview of what’s to potentially become Opel’s new hero model.

Opel is yet to confirm that a production version will follow the concept, and specific details for the concept are limited.

Rumours suggest the GT in concept form is a two-door, two-seater coupe built on the same platform as the new Astra, and featuring front or all-wheel-drive.

The original Opel GT racked up 103,463 sales between 1968 and 1973. Powered by a 1.1 litre or 1.9 litre four, it was no powerhouse, but it was stylish (Agent 86, Maxwell Smart, used one in the opening credits of the show's last series).

This car, like many sports cars of the time, was smashed out the park by the Datsun 240Z.

Fans can expect another tidbit of information next week, and likely several more ahead of the Geneva unveiling. Stay tuned - and check out the video below.
