Hyundai’s Prius-challenging Ioniq hybrid now has rear-view and interior identities as the Korean carmaker continues to unveil the new model piece by piece.

A pair of new pictures has been officially released by Hyundai to follow the sketches revealed last month, along with some new data on the Ioniq’s powerplants.

Hyundai claims “class-leading” fuel economy, but is yet to put a final fuel figure on any of the new model’s three powertrains.

As previously revealed, the Ioniq will be available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric form, which the carmaker claims is a world-first for the same body-type.

Hyundai does tell us that the Ioniq uses a combined 53 percent advanced high strength steel and aluminium composite, saving 12.6kg (45 percent). The bonnet, tailgate and suspension components are all made from aluminium.

The hybrid model will be the first to be seen in showrooms, powered by a 77kW 1.6 litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a claimed 40 percent thermal efficiency, matched with a 32kW electric motor.

Rather than a CVT automatic, as used by the outgoing Prius, the Ioniq will be matched with a dual-clutch auto which Hyundai says aids a power transmission efficiency rating of 95.7 percent.

A “dynamic ride and handling” experience is promised for Ioniq customers, with Hyundai saying the battery pack is placed low and forward to promote stable cornering.

“Ioniq embodies Hyundai Motors’ new thinking and bold ambitions for the future,” Hyundai’s Rag Jung said.

“This world-class dedicated hybrid will be the starting point of our future mobility.”

The 2016 Hyundai Ioniq is set for a full unveiling this week, with an Australian debut scheduled for later in the year.
