The launch of the Volvo V90 wagon was always going to closely follow the S90 sedan, but leaked images ahead of the car’s official unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March have spoiled the surprise.

Captured by Swedish magazine Teknikens Varld, the new V90 shows how Volvo’s new design themes will sit with the wagon bodystyle.

Up front, the V90 wagon wears the same sheet metal and ‘Thor’s hammer’ running lights as the S90 sedan, but at the rear a longer roof folds into an angled rear screen, framed by a pair of LED tail-lights running from the top of the rear window and deep into each side of the tailgate.

Like the XC90 and S90 before it, the V90 sits atop Volvo’s SPA chassis architecture, and will share its 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol and diesel Drive-E engines, and eight-speed automatic.

Expect to see a range-topping T8 version which pairs the twincharged 235kW T6 petrol engine with a plug-in hybrid system for a combined 298kW, with an all-electric range of around 40km before the petrol motor kicks in.

In line with Volvo’s push upmarket, the V90 is expected to adopt the same interior as seen in the S90, dominated by Volvo’s large Sensus touchscreen interface. Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology is also expected to be included.

At the rear, the V90’s sloping rear window ditches the upright look of the V70 wagon that the new V90 will replace. Luggage space isn’t expected to suffer too greatly however, thanks to the V90’s larger overall dimensions.

Of course, thanks to images of a scale model of the V90 which emerged during 2015, there’s little to learn about the V90’s looks, but the finer details and specifications are to follow.

More official images and details are expected to be revealed in the lead-up to the V90’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, while an SUV-styled V90 Cross Country will likely follow later in the year.

As for Australia, the S90 is expected to land here in Q3 of this year, but the V90 will likely be pushed back to an early 2017 release.
