Toyota’s S-FR sports car concept was unveiled last week ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show, but the Japanese carmaker was somewhat cagey on the finer details.

A six-speed manual transmission was confirmed, as was the car’s exterior dimensions and wheelbase but the powerplant remained a mystery.

Now, leaked details have revealed that a 1.5 litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol unit is powering the S-FR, and a manual transmission is the sole powertrain that will be offered.

We probably don’t have to remind you that this engine is the same size as that fitted to the entry-level Mazda MX-5 in Australia.

And the power output? Where the Mazda unit makes 96kW, the Toyota is good for - wait for it - 97kW.

That extra kilowatt might not be worth much on its own, but the Toyota concept tips the scales at just 980kg, which gives it a 29kg advantage over the 1009kg manual-equipped 1.5 litre MX-5.

Add to the mix the S-FR’s front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout matched with a two-door roadster body and you would be forgiven for thinking Toyota had a specific target in mind with the S-FR’s design…

Despite the lower weight however, the S-FR features a four-seat layout as opposed to the Mazda’s two-seat interior.

Toyota hinted that the S-FR could preview a new entry-level sports car, and the fact that its specs are close to those of the MX-5 has all but confirmed a production version is coming.

The S-FR will sit below the 86 in Toyota’s line-up, which means a starting price of less than $29,990 for the entry-level model if the new offering makes its way to Australia.

As pricing for the 86 already undercuts the Mazda MX-5 in Australia by $2000, the S-FR has the potential to become an immediate sales hit.

Watch this space.
