You could be mistaken for believing that the ultimate test of a performance car was a lap of the Nurburgring, and we can understand you making that mistake, truly we can. But deep down, we all know that the only true test of a cars ability, the only test that insists on using the same driver and requires a standing start from all of the cars - is a hot lap of the Top Gear test track.
The Stig has flogged the R35 GT-R and recorded a staggering 1:19.7 lap time. We now feel it is possible to believe the rumours and heresay - the R35 GT-R is officially bloody quick!

Saw the episode last night and it was fantastic. Great to see the potential of the car fully exploited which was not the objective of the first road test (GT-R vs the Bullet train).
It just looks so damn planted and settled, it’s no wonder it gets these lap times with what looks like minimal fuss and drama from the driver’s point of view.
And on top of all this, there is absolutely nothing on the power laps board under 1:24.8, the Lancer Evo 8 FQ400 which is some five seconds slower, that has this pace, costs under say $170,000 and your mates can come with you in the back seat and put their gear in a proper sized boot. Amazing.
And FFS Richard much as we love you, stop calling it a damn Datsun! Or get back to driving your VW 911!
The GT-R time is amazing. You wouldn’t expect the GT-R to top the board (even with the Caparo T1 removed) given the “seriousness” of the machines its against, so a Top 10 placing is still worthy of more than a little respect.
The fact that Clarkson was so much more positive in his review of the car than his Times review (and a couple of other reviews) would lead you to believe.
In the interests of fairness, I’d love to see the Stig punt a ZR-1 around….and I can’t wait for the V-Spec.
