Hyundai i30 CRDi a Real Fuel Sipper - Just Ask Hans

Famous Australian Eco-adventurer Hans Tholstrop has just completed an economy trial and the result is remarkable. Hans has taken a manual Hyundai i30 SX CRDi turbo Diesel, with Cub Kamparoo Weekender trailer attached and driven from Sydney to Melbourne on less than one tank of diesel. The frugal Hyundai's fuel tank capacity is 53 litres.

The 400kg Kamparoo Weekender trailer wasn't empty either. To simulate real world conditions, the organisers added 300kg of additional weight to the camper, including a solar powered fridge and charcoal burn oven.

Hans took 11 hours to drive the largely wet, 864.5 kilometre journey down the Hume Highway to Melbourne, a time that included 'sensible' rest stops. Average fuel consumption for the trip was just 5.4 L/100km and a low CO2 output of only 142grams per kilometre was recorded.

 

"This was an exciting challenge that we set for Hans," said Kevin McCann, Hyundai's Director of Sales and Marketing. "The i30 SX 1.6 CRDi turbo Diesel recently beat an array of Diesel and hybrid rivals to top both fuel efficiency and overall operating costs in a survey conducted by the RACV, RAA, RACQ, RACWA & RACT. This drive proves that people can still get out and enjoy Australia without blowing the budget."

The i30 CRDi's official fuel consumption figure is 4.7 L/100km and official CO2 emission figure is 125 grams per kilometre when fitted with a manual transmission (and with no trailer attached).

    Great little car! Finally, Hyundai-Kia is coming up the ladder for overall quality! Still can't wait for the Genesis though!

    These cars get great economy buy you are not necessarily saving money overall depending on what car you part with. I have a 1998 corolla with 170,000k on the odometer which, on a recent highway trip of 400km achieved 6.8 l/100. This was on E10 ethanol blend also. I think I am better off with my trusty Corolla, than spending 20k on a new Hyundai, just to save 2l/100km. Plus diesel is becoming much more expensive than petrol.

    I just drove from Sydney to Melbourne and back 1700km and got 5.92l/100km.

    I thought CW i30 Diesel Wagon would have done better.
