Mitsubishi Wins Electric Division, Second And Third Outright At Pikes Peak

Trevor Collett | Jul 2, 2014

Mitsubishi’s all-electric tilt at the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has yielded results, with the team winning the Electric Modified Division and taking two podium positions.

Driving the MiEV Evolution III EV racer, driver Greg Tracy won the electric division and finished second outright, setting the fourth-fastest time in Pikes Peak history in the process at 9m08.188s.

Teammate Hiroshi Masuoka filled the last step on the podium with third outright at 9m12.204s, marking a successful outing for the EV team in its third attempt at Pikes Peak.

The MiEV Evo III was revealed in mid-June, shaping as an improvement over last year’s Evo II but with an additional 50kW on tap and a lighter chassis.

The EV used four electric motors, with one on each wheel producing 112.5kW for a total output of 450kW.

“I want to thank the team and also Masuoka-San who helped to develop this phenomenal race car to capture this win; truly a team effort,” Tracy said.

“The road surface condition today was rather slippery but the S-AWC (Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control) had eliminated any unnecessary drift of the car, and I was able to attack turns all the way to the top with full confidence.”

The team managed to beat Japanese racing legend Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima, who finished third in the Electric Modified Division after winning the category last year.

Mitsubishi says it plans to use the data and experience from its Pikes Peak programs in development of future road-going EV and PHEV models, along with improvements to four-wheel control technologies.

The 2014 Pikes Peak event was won by French driver Romain Dumas with a time of 9m05.801s. The 2015 event is scheduled for June 28.
