Nokian Presents World-First Winter Tyres, With Retractable Studs: Video

Trevor Collett | Feb 24, 2014

Nokian Tyres has unveiled a world-first for tyre technology, with a new concept tyre that showcases retractable metal studs.

Billed oddly as “non-studded winter tyres with studs”, the new tyre concept allows the user to deploy or retract the metal studs at the push of a button.

Nokian developed the concept in connection with the 80th anniversary of the winter tyre; an invention Nokian claims as its own from 1934.

The tyre-maker’s Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded SUV tyres form the basis of the new concept, with numerous fixed metal bodies embedded in the rubber to house the studs when not in use.

A hard metal pin emerges from the body when the studs are activated, and all four tyres are controlled by a single button.

“This new concept tyre is an amazing technological feat,” Nokian Tyres’ Matti Morri said.

“The unique stud concept may indeed become a reality one day. As the pioneers of the winter tyre world, we show that it is possible to combine a studded and non-studded winter tyre.”

No word yet from Nokian on a possible timeframe or pricing for a road-ready version of its ‘non-studded studded tyres’, but this is one invention that will probably become reality one day.

I'm pretty sure this was in a James Bond movie a couple of years ago?

This is a big deal in Scandinavian countries as you are legally required to use studded tyres in winter. This measn you have to have two sets of tyres and change them twice a year - expensive outlay but worth it given the safety benefits. Having one set of tyres that can do both at the flick of a switch potentially could be a huge saving, depending on the cost premium for these tyres of course.

It is a great concept - but will it be cost effective?
However, “non-studded winter tyres with studs” - this is right up there with the ATO's "non-assessable non-exempt income" classification of superannuation income streams from taxed funds for retirees over 60!
