Toyota Australia has confirmed that its larger and more spacious 2014 Corolla Sedan will be built in Thailand, rather than Japan like its hatch sibling.

The news will see Australia's Thai-sourced model share grow beyond the 20 percent achieved in 2013 - a share that equalled 228,479 sales and a 32.9 percent increase over the previous year.

Carmakers operating in Thailand benefit from a Free Trade Agreement with Australia that sees imported vehicles avoiding the usual five percent import duty.

In a statement today, Toyota Australia's executive sales director Tony Cramb said that sourcing the Corolla Sedan from Thailand has allowed the company to offer a larger car without impacting greatly on prices.

The new Corolla Sedan, revealed early last year and due in Australia from February, rides on a 2700mm wheelbase - a space 100mm longer than in the new Corolla hatch.

"That 100mm is very important inside a car where more than half of the interior has been devoted to improving the space and comfort of rear-seat passengers, including a significant increase in knee room," Cramb said.

He added that the Thai plant, which also produces the top-selling HiLux pickup, is able to produce vehicles that match the quality of cars built in Japan.

This week, the new Corolla Hatch was confirmed as Australia's best-selling car of 2013, the first time Toyota has achieved that status in this market.

Toyota Australia is joined by the likes of Honda, Mazda, Ford, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Isuzu Ute in sourcing top-selling models from Thai plants.
