As the Formula One field puts the finishing touches on their all-new turbocharged V6 engines for the 2014 season, Honda has followed in Mercedes-Benz and Renault's footsteps and released an audio clip of their new powerplant.

Compared to this year's naturally-aspirated V8s, the new V6 turbos don't quite have the same level of aural excitement.

However, with ultra-high redlines in the region of 15,000rpm they're still bound to thrill spectators, and there's no doubting the power these engines are capable of - despite displacing just 1.6 litres, the same as the average light hatchback.

Honda's new engine won't hit the track in anger until the start of the 2015 Formula One season, however we'll be able to see other manufacturers duke it out with their own turbo 1.6 V6s next year when the season kicks off in Melbourne on March 16.
