2013 Subaru WRX RS40: Rally Hero Tribute On Sale In Australia

TMR Team | Jul 31, 2013

Subaru has introduced what it says will be the last limited-edition model in the current WRX range. Fittingly, the special model comes as a tribute to the WRX's legendary rally record.

Arriving 20 years after the first WRX went on sale in Japan, the new RS40 model also celebrates Subaru Australia's 40th anniversary.

Subaru says it has packed more than $7000 of value into the $44,490 WRX RS40, showcasing the iconic rally colour combo of a WR Blue body on 17-inch gold wheels.

“WR Blue remains a customer favourite colour in the WRX palette, so it’s entirely fitting that this last-in-line special edition of the current car carries the famous blue and gold combination," Subaru Australia boss Nick Senior said.

There's also a number of STI components, including spoilers at both ends, an STI short-shift gear assembly and an STI flexible tower strut brace.

The cabin scores Recaro seats with blue Alcantara highlights and a numbered RS40 badge. There's also RS40 badging on the exterior.

The WRX RS40 is only available in sedan and is limited to 300 units, all in WR Blue Mica paint. It's available for pre-order now and will be in showrooms from the end of August.

What's next? The all-new WRX, of course, which TMR's spy photos reveal is well into the final stages of development. Get all the details here.

OMG that is a marketing angle right there! If someone swallows poison or has alcohol poisoning etc. you just stand them in front of this car and they can purge their stomach's and be saved! Hero car!

The car that produces the ugliest cars in the world.... Strikes again! Seriously this is so 1990's I can't even believe they still think blue cars (and even more so gold wheels) looks good. I'm a rally fan but couldn't think of anything worse than this shocker....

Blue is... a pretty straightforward colour, dude. Every carmaker counts it among their main options.

Not saying blue should be outlawed but I think blue on gold is pathetic for a SE, even with their rally colour heritage. Sadly Subaru must have hired the Great Wall, Design Assistants, Secretaries, inbred aunties, blind dog to design their cars... The Liberty and Forester are truly a travesty. The WRX is their best but not a great looking car. I have had 3 WRX and STI's so I am far from a brand hater.

Damn... I looked at buying one of these 4yrs ago and thought it was horribly outdated (and fairly ugly) back then. Way to fall asleep at the wheel Subaru sad

Clearly you people rather look at the outside of vehicles rather than drive them

Nope while outward appearance is a factor I chose an Evo because in every way it out performs the STI. As has every model since the 90's. bleh

As for this discussion, this is a 100% cosmetic update to the WRX and thus should be discussed. Not sure your point makes sense tbh...

Haha, the Evo looks a dozen times better than the WRX and WRX STI, so I'm down with that!

I drove a dog stock WRX and i thought something was serious wrong with it, it had like 1970 turbo lag, i got outdragged over the first 10m by a Datsun 120Y sad

Tiring to drive really, GREAT in the bends though, maybe just a weekend toy? cool
