Mitsubishi GR-HEV Diesel-electric Hybrid Previews 2015 Triton Pickup

Malcolm Flynn | Mar 5, 2013

Mitsubishi has released new images of its GR-HEV light commercial hybrid concept, scheduled to debut at this week's Geneva Motor Show.

Teased in a tightly-cropped image of the rear, the concept showcases a new diesel-electric hybrid system - and likely previews the next Triton pickup.

The GR-HEV melds an evolved form of the Triton's curvaceous cabin and long-tail proportions with the latest Mitsubishi styling, loosely following the direction of the PX-MiEV concept that later became the 2013 Outlander SUV.

Unlike the existing Triton, the GR-HEV’s ute tub is integrated into the cabin design, but the pictured solid rear-axle asserts its working vehicle priorities.

If the GR-HEV makes its way to production, expect a more conventional separate tub design, along with a slightly shorter rear overhang and a less bulbous tailgate.

No specific mechanical details have been offered at this stage, but we know that the GR-HEV features a Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drivetrain, and a diesel-electric hybrid power source that produces just 149g/km of CO2.

The next Triton will debut with the usual spread of conventional powertrains, but a hybrid version is also expected, with Mitsubishi promising an electric or electrically-assisted variant in each model range by 2015.
