Hyundai has introduced its small but capacious i30 Tourer wagon to Australia, arriving from Europe at the end of February.

Joining the existing i30 five-door hatch range with a $22,990 starting point, the Tourer offers two trim grades, petrol and diesel engines, and manual and automatic transmissions.

The Active grade is available in both manual and automatic form with 1.6 petrol and 1.6 diesel engines, while the Elite offers a 1.6 diesel automatic form only.

Mechanical Package

While the hatch range gets a 1.8 litre petrol engine producing 110kW and 178Nm of torque, the 1.6 litre petrol in the i30 Tourer offers 99kW and 164Nm.

Diesel models feature the same 1.6 litre engine driving the hatch, offering 94kW and 260Nm.

Transmissions include six-speed manual or six-speed automatic (with sequential manual mode) options.

Fuel consumption is listed at 6.3 l/100km for the petrol manual, and a low 4.6 l/100km for the diesel manual. The diesel auto is listed at a noteably higher 5.8 l/100km.

The wagon replaces the hatch's torsion beam rear suspension with a multi-link arrangement, and the front gets MacPherson struts.

Hyundai's flex-steer system is also featured, adjusting steering weight to suit driver preference and conditions.

Features and Dimensions

Features standard to the i30 Tourer Active include 16-inch alloys and a full-size spare, a touchscreen display with Bluetooth and USB, rear parking sensors, LED daytime running lights and a chilled glove compartment.

The up-spec Elite adds a reversing camera, auto folding side mirrors, satellite navigation and SUNA traffic updates on a seven-inch touch isplay, dual-zone climate control, a colour info screen in the instrument cluster and a power start button.

The Elite also gets a chrome beltline garnish and a tailgate wing, while both models get roof rails, a cargo blind and net, flat-folding rear seats and a 12-volt power point in the rear.

Standard safety features across the i30 Tourer range include Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and ABS with EBD & Brake Assist System (BAS).

Seven airbags are standard, and there is also ultra-high tensile steel within the body shell.

The i30 Tourer shares the hatch's 2650mm wheelbase, but adds 185mm in overall length. Rear storage capacity has thus grown to 528 litres with the rear seats up - a full 150 litres more than the hatch.

Storage capacity increases to 1642 litres with the second row folded flat, again an increase, this time of 326 litres.

All models are covered by Hyundai's five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty, along with three years of NavTeq satnav map updates, 12 months of free roadside assistance and a free 1500km service.
