Sporting two more cylinders than the rest of Australia’s Insignia line-up, the turbo OPC adds all-wheel drive and a comprehensive list of chassis and styling upgrades to create a bona-fide sports saloon.
Available in sedan bodystyle only, the $59,990 Insignia OPC boasts a similar spec to Audi’s S4 sports sedan, but at half the price.
Opel describes the Insignia OPC as its most powerful model to date, with 239kW and 435Nm produced by a version of GM’s Australian-made 2.8 litre turbocharged petrol V6.
These figures both arrive at 5250rpm, and combine with a six-speed automatic transmission, Adaptive 4x4 and electronic rear limited-slip differential to deliver claimed 0-100km/h acceleration of 6.3 seconds.
This figure doesn’t quite match the smaller Astra OPC’s 6.0 second time, but is a fair hustle considering the Insignia OPC’s 1809kg kerb weight.
Beneath the Insignia OPC sits a Nürburgring-honed chassis set-up, with FlexRide adaptive dampers that offer the driver cabin selectable Standard, Sport and OPC modes.
This OPC mode tightens the dampers’ bump and rebound settings, along with the steering ratio and throttle response, and is signified by red instrument illumination.
The Insignia OPC’s spring rates, bushes, and swaybar settings have also been adjusted to suit, and the front suspension uses Opel’s torque-steer mitigating HiPerStrut linkages and hydraulic power steering assistance.
Brakes are 355mm front/315mm rear units with Brembo four piston calipers on the front, and the standard wheels are 19 inch alloys wrapped in 245/40R19 tyres.
The Insignia OPC carries an official combined fuel consumption figure of 10.9l/100km.
The Insignia OPC is set aside visually from bread-and butter Insignia models with unique bumpers, side-skirts, rear lip-spoiler, and dual trapezoidal chrome exhaust-tips.
Inside, the OPC is fitted with heated Recaro front seats, with eight-way power adjustment and extendable seat bases on both sides.
These seats maintain the lesser Insignia models’ AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rüken e.V.) accreditation, having received an award for ergonomic excellence from the German back-health organisation.
Both front and rear seats are trimmed in partial perforated leather, and are joined by OPC-specific flat bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, revised instruments, gear selector, door sills, pedals and floor mats.
Piano-black detailing further differentiates the Insignia OPC’s interior, along with darkened headlining.
Convenience features include hill-start assist, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, auto-dimming rear view mirror and bluetooth telephony.
The Insignia OPC is also fitted with automatic wipers and headlamps, along with high-beam assist for the bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights.
Audio is via a seven-speaker system with a seven-inch screen, integrated satnav, and SD card, 3.5mm, USB, and iPod connectivity.
The Insignia OPC’s colour choices are limited to Summit White, Asteroid Grey, Carbon Flash Black, and OPC-specific Arden Blue.
All colours aside from white are considered a premium option, and cost a further $695.
Also optional are 20-inch alloy wheels for a further $1000, with wider 255/35R20 tyres.
Like all Opel models, the Corsa OPC is included in Opel Australia’s Opel Service Plus capped price servicing scheme, with all scheduled services within the first three years or 45,000km capped at $399.
One novel OPC option will be the unique PowerApp application for Apple iPhone and iPad users.
When combined with an optional dealer fitted smartphone controller, the (99 cents from Apple’s Australian App Store) OPC PowerApp will enable drivers to view details such as boost pressure, throttle position, lateral acceleration or engine torque in real time on their Apple device.
The Opel Insignia OPC comes equipped with dual front, side and curtain airbags, stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, active headrests, and collapsible pedals.
