Read on for this year's hopefuls, and click through to each model for more.

The finalists for the 2013 World Car of the Year are:

Finalists for the 2013 Performance Car of the Year:

The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ twins were awarded TMR's 2012 Best Buy and, like the Boxster and Cayman, their appearance in both lists here suggests a strong chance for at least one win.

Volkswagen could also take back-to-back wins in both categories, with the all-new Golf and the new Boxster both standout launches in the past year.

Bet you the silly Toyobaru will win.... unless the Europeans aren't narrow minded like the Australian media with comparing the car/s to EVERYTHING.

Not having a dig at TMR.

Would be epic to see Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ snatch both World Car and Performance Car of 2013.

Do think most likely contenders for World Car are Volkswagen Golf, Mazda CX5 and Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ.

Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86, Mercedes Benz SLS Roadster and Audi RS5 for Performance Car class.

Mazda 6 is fantastic but they should have a manual version for Australia.
