Volkswagen’s entry to the 2013 World Rally Championship kicked off with a bang at the weekend, with Sebastien Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia recording a second place in the season opening Rally Monte Carlo.
The new Polo R WRC racer finished second only to defending champion Sebastian Loeb’s Citroen, leaving Volkswagen motorsport boss Jost Capito decidedly happy with his new team.
“Second place in the first rally of the new Polo R WRC is more than we could have expected. The Rally Monte Carlo is the most complex event in the calendar and the team has here shown that they are ready for the World Rally Championship,” Capito said.
The new Polo racer is the result of 17 months of development, which saw more than 1700 unique components developed and tested over more than 20,000km - all before turning a wheel in competition.
Filling out the Monte Carlo podium was Loeb’s fellow Citroen driver Dani Sordo, while the second factory Volkswagen entry of Jari-Matti Latvala and co-driver Miikka Anttila crashed out early on during the Col de Turini stage.
The next round of the 2013 WRC will commence on February 7, with the Rally Sweden event.
