Hyundai Announces New Nurburgring Test Centre For Future Models

It may have built its fortune on 'cheap and cheerful', but Hyundai is ready to take another step toward 'state of the art' manufacturing.

The Korean giant-slayer has revealed this week that it has begun construction of a new test centre at the Nurburgring in Germany.

Famous for both racing and prototype testing, the Nurburgring is home to permanent centres for the likes of BMW and Aston Martin.

Construction of the $7million, 3050m² building is already well underway, and Hyundai says feedback from the facility will assist development at its existing R&D centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

“The new Hyundai test centre at Nürburgring is an expression of our intention to focus on improving the customer experience of our vehicles, such as ride and handling – an important consideration for European drivers," Hyundai Europe's Allan Rushforth said.

"The new centre represents a significant investment, and one we expect will significantly contribute to enhancing the perception of the Hyundai brand and our key competitive competence in Europe.”

In 2012, nearly 95 percent of the 444,000 Hyundai cars sold in Europe were designed, engineered and tested in Rüsselsheim, including the popular i30, ix35 and i40 models.

The Hyundai-Kia group is currently the world's fifth top-selling carmaker.

Will this foolishness never end? We have seen a generation of hard riding uncomfortable cars with ever stiffer suspensions all "tuned" on the Nurburgring.

Come on car makers - people don't drive on the Nurburgring (though some may think they do...) they drive on real streets with corners and traffic lights. I'd really like to see some cars properly set up for the urban environment.
