Talk of a new Mercedes-Benz AMG 4.0 litre turbo V8 continues this week, with reports out of the UK pointing to a debut in the C 63 sports sedan replacement in late 2013.

UK mag Autocar reports that the new unit, also expected to feature in the upcoming SLC ‘baby SLS’ sports car, is being developed alongside the upcoming A 45/CLA 45 AMG’s 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit.

Modular design elements are set to include common bore spacing and individual cylinder capacity; a practice employed by most manufacturers across modern engine families.

The 4.0 litre engine is expected to replace the current naturally aspirated 6.2 litre V8 in the C-Class based AMG models, exceeding its entry 336kW output.

A potential 448kW tuning envelope has been suggested, approaching the 6.2 litre engine’s apparent 464kW zenith in the recently unveiled SLS AMG Black Series. This also suggests the SLS AMG models will be the final bearers of the vaunted 6.2 V8.

If these reports prove accurate, the 4.0 litre V8 will sit neatly beneath the existing 5.5 litre twin-turbo unit used in several larger models, and likely replace the naturally aspirated 5.5 litre engine used in the current SLK AMG.

The report also suggests that future C-Class AMG cars will be the first to offer an all-wheel drivetrain in right-hand-drive, although no specific sources are noted.

While the 4.0 litre V8 is still unconfirmed for production, AMG boss Ola Kallenius hinted at the recent LA Auto Show that such an engine was coming.

“We’ve already had downsizing to 5.5 (litres) and sophisticated direct-injection technology – we’ll see more of that in the future,” he said.
