Audi's updated 2013 Q5 SUV is now on sale in Australia, bringing powertrain refinements, a number of new features and a modest pricing shuffle.

Styling changes for the midsized SUV have been kept to a minimum, with the standout tweaks including revised headlight internals and an updated grille.

Revealed internationally in June, the updated Q5 range kicks off at the same $62,200 starting point, although Audi claims it has added around $6500 in additional value to entry models.

Mechanical Package

Driving the 2013 Q5 models are a range of either all-new or updated engines (depending on the model), with direct-injection and forced induction (super- or turbo-charging).

Depending on the model, there is also idle stop-start for increased fuel efficiency and - with petrol variants - an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that replaces the seven-speed S-tronic auto (still fitted to diesel models).

Fuel consumption for the 165kW/350Nm 2.0 TFSI is listed at 7.9 l/100km (an eight percent improvement), streaking to 100km/h in 7.1 seconds.

The 130kW/380Nm 2.0 TDI model is expected to be the most popular offering, with fuel consumption listed at a low 6.1 l/100km and a 0-100km/h time of nine seconds flat.

The 180kW/580Nm 3.0 TDI model lists fuel use at 6.4 l/100km (15 percent improvement), with a sharp 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds.

In the 3.0 TFSI is a new supercharged petrol V6, replacing the 3.2 litre engine of the outgoing range. Power is rated at 200kW and 400Nm (5kW/70Nm increase), and fuel use is listed at 8.5 l/100km.

Audi says the big petrol Q5 will hit 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds.

All Q5 models have also switched from hydraulic to electromechanical power steering, improving fuel consumption by around 0.3 l/100km.

Suspension is also revised, with the five-link wishbone front and multi-link rear arrangement getting softer springs and stiffened dampers, along with new anti-roll bars - all with a view to greater comfort.

Quattro all-wheel-drive is standard across the range.

Features

Updates for the 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI models include Drive Select drive modes, driver fatigue detection, keyless entry, hill hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring, increased storage options, powered front seats with adjustable lumbar, and 18-inch wheels - up from 17 inches.

These features join the existing package that includes leather seat trim, automatic wipers, aluminium or wood highlights, and 10-speaker audio. Eight airbags are also standard.

Further up from the four-cylinder models are the supercharged 3.0 TFSI petrol and the 3.0 TDI turbodiesel, which have increased in price by $1100 and $500 respectively.

Audi says it has added $7000 in new features however, including a powered front passenger seat, Drive Select and hill-hold assist, Audi's MMI display system with satellite navigation and a rear-view camera, and memory-enabled auto-dipping door mirrors.

In the cabin is an updated steering wheel and revised instrument cluster, along with new trim colours and improved materials. Audi says it has also improved audio controls and air conditioning efficiency.
