Mazda's big CX-9 SUV has been given a makeover for the 2013 model year, bringing the wagon's face in-line with the smaller CX-5 and the all-new Mazda6.

Unveiled to the world at October's Australian International Motor Show, the updated seven-seater picks up a brand-new grille and front bumper, along with updated headlights.

The update is not about styling alone, however, with new standard features and updates joining the range for 2013.

Inside, the CX-9's infotainment system gets new audio, navigation and speech recognition technology. There are also new safety features, including Forward Obstruction Warning, Lane Departure Warning and High Beam Control.

Bluetooth calling and audio streaming is now standard across the range, as is USB audio connectivity, and all but the entry-level model get satellite navigation.

Mazda says the CX-9's Bluetooth calling has picked up improved noise suppresion, along with simpler voice control, a new speed dial function, and a 1000-number phone book.

Features standard in the pre-update front-wheel-drive models carry over for 2013, including a reversing camera, automatic headlights and wipers, tri-zone climate control, 18-inch wheels, six airbags, electronic stability control and roll stability control.

Luxury models get 20-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, leather trim, 10-speaker Bose audio, power adjustable and heated front seats, memory driver's seat, chrome highlights and heated exterior mirrors with auto tilt in reversing.

The Grand Touring flagship features bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and automatic high beam, along with keyless entry and start, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision warning and rear parking sensors.

The new features have seen prices increase, ranging from a $100 hike on the entry model (now $44,525), to $1255 on the Luxury models and $2223 on the top-shelf CX-9 Grand Touring.

Rear storage capacity is listed at 267 litres with all three seating rows upright, growing to 1911 litres with the second and third rows laid flat (1887 in Luxury and Grand Touring models).

Power for the CX-9 is still drawn from the existing model's 3.7 litre V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, producing 204kW and 367Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption remains unchanged, listed at 11.0 l/100km for front-wheel-drive models and 11.2 l/100km in all-wheel-drive form.
