Volkswagen's six year-old Eos cabrio will be replaced by a larger and more luxurious convertible when it is retired, according to new reports.
Thanks to its more powerful engine, the Passat-based Eos has enjoyed relatively strong sales in Australia (663 year-to-date), while the lower-spec and cheaper Golf Cabriolet 118TSI has managed 691 sales this year.
It is no stretch to imagine the end of the Eos however; with 155TSI versions of the Golf Cabrio available overseas, there is little more than the Eos' folding hard-top separating it from the soft-top Golf. Even their wheelbases are a match.
The international debut of the new-generation Beetle Convertible also puts the Eos' future in doubt, with the topless 'bug' and Golf models both carrying more brand cachet.
Now, a new report with Britain's Autocar magazine suggests that Volkswagen's top brass agree, and design boss Klaus Bischoff is in favour of a larger alternative - if production capacity can be found.
"The Eos will not be prolonged when it comes off the market," Bischoff told the magazine. "Retractable hardtops are disappearing from the market now, and to be honest that’s not something I mind."
“There’s definitely room in our line-up for a larger convertible, so why not do it? The problem with such ambitions is that all our existing factories are at full capacity, so any new additions means building new factories."
A larger convertible would likely draw its inspiration from the coupe-like Passat CC, which has been popular with buyers drawn to a sleek but still practical design.
It's a plan that German compatriot Opel has already embraced, revealing its Cascada convertible in October.
The Cascada is understood to be under consideration for an Australian debut in 2014.
