Toyota has introduced a new top-shelf model to its Australian Prius V range, bringing the familiar i-Tech trim grade to the people-moving hybrid.

The new model also celebrates a new sales landmark for the brand, with Toyota confirming 10,000 hybrid sales in Australia this year.

Toyota's growing range of hybrid models includes the Prius hatch, Prius C light car and Prius V wagon, along with the Camry Hybrid sedan.

The 10,000 sales figure also includes the Lexus RX 450h SUV, GS 450h and LS 600hL sedans, and the CT 200h hatch.

The new Prius V i-Tech joins the range at $46,490 - marking a significant $10,500 premium over the regular Prius V model. Toyota says the additional features "more than compensate for the price difference".

New features in i-Tech form include dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-crash safety system for the brakes and seatbelts, and a self-parking system.

There is also a satellite navigation system with digital radio, eight-speaker JBL audio, a heads-up display with navigation prompts, and 'premium' seat trim.

Other new features include auto-levelling LED projector headlamps with washers, an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror, front-seat heaters, water-repellent front-door windows and a panoramic roof with electric sunshade.

Features already standard across the Prius V range include seven airbags, reversing camera (with on-screen guidelines in the i-Tech), hill-start assist, stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes, brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.

Mechanically, the Prius V remains unchanged, with power drawn from the familiar hybrid-drive 1.8 litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, mated to an electric motor and an electronically-controlled CVT automatic transmission.

While the petrol engine's power is rated at 73kW and 142Nm, the addition of the electric motor brings total system output to 100kW.

Toyota claims a combined-cycle fuel consumption rating of 4.4 l/100km, with CO2 emissions listed at 101g/km.

The Prius V is also covered by Toyota's Service Advantage programme, capping the price of up to six scheduled services in the first three years or 60,000km at $130.

Pricing

The Prius V i-Tech is available now, priced at $46,490 (plus on-roads). The regular Prius V is priced at $35,990.
