Erebus Racing has released fresh details of the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG-based Car of The Future (COTF) V8 Supercar it will field together with Stone Brothers Racing in the 2013 championship.

Key among these details are the outputs of its 5.0 litre engine, which is set to produce 485kW at the category-imposed 7500RPM rev-limit, and 616Nm of torque.

According to the team’s website, the unique engine will produce more power and less torque than its roadgoing cousin in its most potent Performance Pack-equipped form.

Specifying precise power figures is unusual for a V8 Supercar team, with most commonly quoting ‘around 650hp’ (485kW) for their engines.

The recently updated E 63 road car uses AMG's twin-turbo 5.5 litre V8 engine, producing 386kW/700Nm in standard-form, and 410kW/800Nm with the optional Performance Pack.

However, the Erebus/SBR E 63 racer will use a de-stroked version of AMG’s 6.2 litre naturally aspirated V8, most closely related to the engine used in current SLS AMG GT3 racers.

A version of this 6.2 litre engine was used in the previous road-going E 63 model, and continues to be used by the AMG C 63, C 63 Black Series, SLS and the new SLS Black Series.

In SLS AMG GT3 guise, the engine uses a specific intake system, revised valve train and camshafts and dry sump lubrication which are understood to be carried across to the 5.0 V8 Supercar engine.

AMG does not publish output figures for the SLS AMG GT3-spec engine, as it is subject to GT3 category Balance of Performance parity restrictions.

In roadgoing form, the SLS 6.2 litre produces 420kW/650Nm, while the recently revealed Black Series version pumps out 464kW/635Nm.

The unique V8 Supercar 5.0 litre spec will be assembled for Erebus Racing/SBR in Germany through the AMG Customer Sports program.

Stone Brothers Racing undertook its first test of the new car’s chassis at Queensland Raceway in mid-October, but at that early stage it was forced to test with Ford Falcon body panels and the team’s existing Ford V8 race engine.

Erebus suggests that the completed car (equipped with Mercedes-Benz panels and engine) will be revealed in early January, before its first track test on February 16 at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The car will make its race debut with a further two Erebus/SBR E 63 racers alongside the Holden, Ford, and Nissan COTF V8 Supercars at the 2013 championship-opening Clipsal 500 round from 28 February to March 3 next year.
