A flood of spy photos has ensured there is little left to know about the look of the updated E-Class, with one eagle-eyed fan even snapping a shot of an undisguised E 63 AMG during filming.

Now, a new promotional video released today reveals that Merc would like you to focus on the E's eyes, the standout styling tweak on the 2013 model.

The video shows that while the headlights of the E-Class have reverted to a single unit, new LED bands trace the diamond-like shapes of the 'old' lights, forming a bridge between the two designs.

LED daytime running lights have fast become a 'must have' feature of new cars, offering brands a new point of differentiation.

BMW has long featured a pair of circular LEDs in its headlamps - affectionately referred to as "angel eyes" or "halo rings" - while Audi's LED lights have evolved from a jewel-like design to increasingly complex ribbons of light.

Along with its redesigned lights and new LEDs, the 2013 E-Class will bring a new grille, bumper and bonnet design.

There will also come a subtly redesigned profile that switches out its rear 'pontoon' wheel guards in favour of a second character line running across the top of the rear arch and into the tail lights.

Expect the updated E-Class to make its global debut in the coming weeks or months.
