Mercedes-Benz has released a trio of teaser images for its upcoming A 45 AMG hot hatch, and confirmed an early 2013 unveiling.

Specific timing for the new model's debut is still to be revealed, but a launch at either the Geneva or New York Auto Show is likely.

The carmaker has already confirmed that its BMW M135i and Audi RS 3 rival will draw power from a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing upwards of 245kW and 400Nm.

The new Merc's numbers will position it favourably against the competition, with the Bimmer offering 235kW and the current RS 3 a hefty 250kW.

While the M135i sends power to the rear wheels, the A 45 AMG will join the RS 3 in offering an all-wheel-drive layout, with motivation getting there through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

AMG sports suspension will feature, including independently-developed front and rear axles with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear.

There will also be electromechanical speed-sensitive steering, AMG high-performance brakes and a three-stage ESP system with Sport Handling mode.

Watch for more details on the A 45 AMG to arrive in the lead-up to its early 2013 launch.
