There's a fast new Honda, but it's not a Civic Type R, it's not the new NSX and it's not a CBR 1000RR Fireblade.

This one has wings, but it's not an F1 car; it's the Hondajet passenger airplane. And, after nearly 10 years of testing, it has finally entered production.

Announced at this week's National Business Aviation Association convention in Florida, the first of the $4million jets are already being built at the company's North Carolina plant.

“An assembly line for HondaJet production is in place, major aircraft components including the fuselage and wing have been produced and we have started assembly of the first customer aircraft,” Honda Aircraft President and CEO Michimasa Fujino said.

“Commencing production is the most important milestone in the HondaJet program to date, with only the future Federal Aviation Administration Type Certification and first customer delivery ranking greater in significance.”

Driven by a pair of GE/Honda engines, the Hondajet promises a cruising speed of 778km/h (420 knots) and a maximum altitude of 43,000 feet, with seating for five to six passengers.

You won't be taking one from Sydney to LA, though, with the Hondajet's 2593km range ensuring it is kept to domestic flights or short international hops.

“The challenging spirit upon which Mr Soichiro Honda founded Honda Motors is still alive today as Honda Aircraft fulfils one of Honda's long-standing dreams to advance human mobility skyward," the company said in a statement this week.

The HondaJet will be supported by a new 90,000sq-ft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facilitiy in the US, and Federal Aviation Administration Type Certification is expected to come in the near future.
