Audi’s long-awaited R8 e-tron pure-electric supercar could now be on the chopping block.

US mag Car and Driver reports that the pure electric version of the R8 supercar has been halted at the eleventh hour.

Previously slated for a 1000-unit limited production run by the end of the year, development has reportedly been halted by Audi’s new R&D chief Wolfgang Dürheimer, ahead of a review of the model’s production feasibility.

Details are limited at this stage, but the stoppage is said to be largely due to the cost of the e-tron’s battery system and could see the project shelved indefinitely.

Audi had reportedly based the R8 e-tron’s production feasibility on the cost of its batteries dropping in time for the model’s launch - a gamble which apparently has not paid off.

This report comes after a protracted news drip-feed, in anticipation of a late 2012 model launch.

These details included an innovative synthetic sound generator, digital rear view mirror, and 8:09.099 pure-electric production model Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record.

This last boast will be negated if the R8 e-tron never reaches production.

The R8 e-tron was set to go head-to-head with Mercedes-Benz’ SLS AMG Electric Drive - revealed in production form at the recent Paris Motor Show, ahead of a confirmed July 2013 European on-sale date.

Keep an eye on TMR for any further R8 e-tron updates.
