Malcolm Flynn | Oct 18, 2012

Holden has taken the wraps off its new Malibu medium sedan at the Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) today, before arriving in showrooms in the second quarter of next year.

Replacing the slow-selling Epica model (discontinued in 2011), the new Malibu will take the fight to established mid-size heroes such as Toyota Camry, Honda Accord Euro and Mazda’s new 6.

The Malibu is sold internationally under the Chevrolet badge, and is based on GM’s Epsilon II architecture shared locally with the Opel Insignia.

Holden’s Malibu has been tailored to suit Australian conditions, benefitting from an extensive local engineering and evaluation program.

When launched, the Malibu will be available with a choice of petrol or diesel four cylinder drivetrains, both tied to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The petrol engine is a 2.4 litre naturally aspirated unit, while the turbodiesel is a 2.0 litre common-rail unit. Holden is yet to specify outputs or fuel efficiency for the Malibu.

Internationally, the Malibu is powered by a 193kW/353Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged engine - good for a 6.3 second run to 100km/h run, GM says - along with a 141kW/250Nm 2.5 litre Ecotec engine.

On the inside, Malibu will feature GM’s MyLink infotainment system - among the first local GM products to do so.

“MyLink elevates wireless connectivity to a completely new level by enabling customers to control certain smartphone apps through Malibu’s touchscreen”, Holden boss Mike Devereux said.

Holden will reveal further specifications and pricing closer to Malibu’s second quarter on-sale date.
