A sporty new version of Volkswagen's tiny Up city car will hit the scene in 2013, the carmaker's development boss Ulrich Hackenberg has confirmed.
In concept form, the Up GT is powered by an 81kW version of the regular model's 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine - up from 55kW in the Australian range.
While the GT concept can't be accused of packing buckets of power, its 900kg kerb weight should ensure that performance is suitably brisk.
Styling tweaks for the sporty Up GT include the familiar honeycomb pattern to the low-mounted grille, flanked by large intakes and LED daytime running lights.
There's also 17-inch alloy wheels, twin-exhaust tips at the rear, side skirts and a roof-mounted rear spoiler.
Exact timing for the new sports model's debut is yet to be revealed, but for now, Australian buyers will have to make do with the still-quick 55kW model already on sale - or the larger Polo GTI.
