Local pricing for the lightweight, track-focused MINI Cooper John Cooper Works GP has been announced, with the fastest factory MINI ever built to be priced from $56,900 - $6500 more than a "regular" Cooper Hatch JCW.

Based on the MINI Cooper Hatch, only 30 cars out of a global production run of 2000 will head to Australia.

Besides its rarity, the Cooper JCW GP's appeal is also bolstered by its extensive performance-oriented modifications.

Power from the JCW GP's 1.6 litre direct-injected and turbocharged engine is boosted to 160kW (5kW more than the cooking model JCW turbo four), thanks in large part to a lightweight crankshaft, sodium-filled exhaust valves, beefier pistons and a reinforced cylinder head.

Torque rises by a substantial 20Nm, topping out at 280Nm when the engine's overboost function is activated. The traction control system also features a "GP" mode, which enhances driving dynamics.

The JCW GP's suspension is also tweaked and features adjustable components, while the brakes are upgraded with larger rotors. Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels are bolted to the JCW GP's hubs, and are shod with high-performance tyres.

An aerodynamic package of a front lip spoiler, roof spoiler, rear diffuser and ducted side skirts help cut drag and increase downforce. A beefy chassis brace spans the gap between the rear suspension turrets to add stiffness, and results in the deletion of the rear seats.

The whole package is good for a 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.3 seconds. MINI says the JCW GP has lapped the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in 8:23.

In Australia, standard equipment will include a pair of heated Recaro bucket seats for the driver and front passenger.

All Australian-delivered Cooper JCW GPs will only be available in one spec, and unlike other models in the MINI range it won't be able to be customised with factory or dealer-fit accessories.

In fact, the Cooper JCW GP will only be available in one colour - Thunder Grey - which is exclusive to the model.

Think the JCW GP might be up your alley? With only 30 cars available, you may want to snap one up quick-smart:

“Judging by customer reactions to date the MINI JCW GP is set to become an instant collector’s item,” said MINI Australia General Manager Kai Bruesewitz.

“The appeal for hot-hatch aficionados and track day racers will mean the GP edition won’t sit in showrooms for long so interested customers should move quickly.”
