Honda's brand-new Accord won't be here until mid next year, but the carmaker has now revealed a new addition to the range: a plug-in hybrid model.
The Accord PHEV will feature a twin-drive system in the engine bay, which sees a 124kW electric motor paired with Honda's 100kW Earth Dreams 2.0 litre i-VTEC four-cylinder engine. Total system output is 143kW.
The battery pack is a 6.7kWh lithium ion array, and Honda claims a three-hour recharge on a standard US 120V power point. This can be reduced to an hour with an uprated, 240V power supply.
The batteries are nestled above the rear suspension, reducing intrusion in the boot and keeping them inboard for protection from rear-enders.
Total range is a claimed 810km, with an electric-only range of 16 to 24km.
As in the Fit (Jazz) EV, a regenerative braking system will be fitted to recover kinetic energy under braking, while Honda says that it will allow for "exceptionally natural brake pedal feel".
Honda says its system differs from its rivals' hydraulic booster system, in that the Accord's hydraulics are under full electronic control.
The car will feature three driving modes - full electric, HV and HV Charge.
The HV mode will kick in when the battery's charge is low, and also at high loads - such as hard acceleration.
HV Charge is similar to HV but will also work the petrol engine harder to not only cover the driving requirements but it will also increase the battery's level of charge at the same time.
In order to reduce weight, Honda will fit an aluminium front sub-frame and rear bumper beam, 17-inch forged alloys, and the spare tyre is replaced by puncture repair kit.
Aero improvements include underbody covers to clean up the airflow, wheel covers and a discreet boot spoiler.
Fuel consumption equivalent figures are still to be revealed, but Honda expects to get a 100MPG-e rating in full electric mode.
US Accord PHEVs will be well-equipped but as yet we have no information on Australian specs or availability.
