Peugeot has at last pulled the covers off its new 208 GTi hotbox, following the unveiling of a thinly-veiled 'concept' version earlier this year.

This is no mere styling kit either, with the latest offering in the iconic GTi range packing less weight and more power than its 207 GTi predecessor.

Driven by the same 1.6 litre turbocharged mill found in the (much) larger RCZ coupe, the 208 GTi sends a full 147kW and 275Nm through a six-speed manual transmission.

By comparison, Volkswagen's popular Polo GTI offers 132kW with a turbo- and supercharged 1.4 litre engine, while the 1.6 litre turbo engine in Ford's new Fiesta ST puts out 130kW.

As for heft, the new performer lists a kerb weight of 1160kg, making it around 165kg lighter than the previous model.

Peugeot promises a 0-100km/h sprint time under seven seconds (no official figure offered yet), and rolling on from 80 to 120km/h will take the same amount of time.

Helping the new GTi hold its line is an enhanced subframe and rear crossmember, and an upgraded and re-tuned suspension package with sports springs and shocks, and new anti-roll bars.

It also scores larger brakes, the discs measuring 302mm at the front and 249m at the rear.

On the styling front, the GTi trim of the already-sharp 208 includes 17-inch wheels and a more prominent rear wing, along with a faux diffuser at the rear and a twin-port exhaust tip.

There are also new side sills, a honeycomb lower grille, a subtle colour tweak to the upper grille, and France's Tricolore flag colours.

Australia

The new 208 GTi will make its international debut at the Paris Motor Show this month, and an Australian launch is expected to occur in the second quarter of 2013.
