The Victorian city of Ballarat will kick off its 2012 Festival of Motoring this weekend, celebrating the region's contribution to Australia's motoring history.

The festival proper will begin with a gala cocktail evening on August 31, but a special driving event will begin in Buninyong tomorrow morning, getting the week's activities underway.

Next Tuesday will see a number of older racing vehicles displayed, running through until Saturday September 1, when a Show & Shine event will also be held at the Ballarat Airport.

The Saturday's Motor Show & Model Expo will see some 20 historic sports and race cars displayed, and around 500 items including tether cars, vintage model engines and rare diecast model cars.

A supercharged V12-powered P51 WW2 Mustang fighter will also be on hand at the event.

The day's events will be followed by a formal dinner, and it will all be wrapped up on Sunday September 2 with timed laps of the historic airport's old racing circuit and a Father's Day dinner.

Last year, the event saw more than 5000 enthusiasts turn out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the last race held at the circuit - including a number of drivers and officials that participated back in the good ol' days of Ballarat motor racing.
