French company Vintech will debut its homage to the Porsche 550 Spyder at the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance event this weekend.

Porsche's delicious 550 Spyder has been a fan favourite for many years and was of course mythologised by ill-fated actor James Dean and his "Little Bastard."

The Vintech 550 Tribute's looks are closely based on the less-famous Coupe, a car built for endurance racing.

Vintech claims the engine delivers just over 200kW and is mated to a five-speed transmission.

The Vintech 550 Tribute features a spaceframe chassis said to come in at a featherweight 550kg.

Helping to keep weight down is a liberal use of carbon fibre, also ensuring the 3.0 litre flat-four isn't worked too hard.

The Vintech blog has a sizeable collection of photos detailing the build of the 550 Tribute, with renderings, diagrams and component pictures, including the carbon floor and the carbon-clothed spaceframe.

The 550 Spyder was first shown at the 1953 Paris Motor Show and was very well-received.

The very first 550s rolled off the line with a simple ladder-frame chassis and a sophisticated alloy 82kW 1.5 litre, dry-sump four-cylinder.

Despite its modest output, the 550 would reach 220km/h, although your hair probably wouldn't, thanks to the tiny windscreen.

The 550 was later updated in 1956 with a steel spaceframe and upgraded engine.

Vintech hasn't released any performance numbers, but with its low weight and decent output, they should be pretty snappy.

If you're reaching for your wallet, don't. Vintech hasn't said if it will be putting the 550 Tribute into production.

Having said that, if you've enough zeroes to spare in your bank account, we're sure Vintech will make an exception.

Or you could shell out the wrong side of $3.5m for an original…
