Overseas owners of suitably-equipped BMW and MINI models can now stream the Stitcher SmartRadio service directly to their car.

Like Honda's recent US-market tie-up with Aha Radio, Stitcher SmartRadio streams digital radio stations across the internet to your phone, and then into your car stereo.

BMW and MINI owners can preset their streaming radio stations on their iPhone, and also receive recommendations via the SmartStation feature.

“Our app concept allows our customers to download the same services to their car that they use on their smartphone – simply by downloading the free app,” Dimitri Meu-laping Feyou, Product Manager at the BMW Group AppCenter said.

The app can be downloaded for free from the App Store, and can be used worldwide in BMW models equipped with the Apps option and MINI cars with the MINI Connected option.

The Apps option bridges the functionality between the app and the phone, allowing the driver to make selections via the iDrive controller.

Don't expect to see Stitcher in Australia anytime soon, as BMW is unable to offer the Apps and Connected Drive features in Australia due to local laws.

Speaking with TMR today, BMW Australia's Scott Croaker confirmed that, for now at least, the systems remain off limits for the Australian market.

"Stitcher relies on the BMW Apps feature, which is not slated for Australia due to the driver distraction laws. We'll continue to look at the application of these features in the future."
