Priced from $31,990, the Turbo brings more power, sharpened dynamics and a host of styling and feature upgrades both inside and out.
The Turbo carries a relatively small $3000 premium over the 103kW Veloster+ 1.6 GDI, justified by a nearly 50kW power boost - and a meaner disposition.
The 2013 Veloster SR Turbo offers 150kW at 6000rpm and 265Nm of torque between 1750 and 4500rpm, delivered by Hyundai's new 1.6 litre direct-injected and twin-scroll turbocharged petrol engine.
Transmission options include six-speed manual and automatic transmissions - the latter with paddle shifters - although the auto here is a hydraulic unit rather than the DCT found in the non-turbo Veloster.
Hyundai puts this down to its DCT being ill-suited to the Turbo's extra torque.
Fuel consumption is listed at 6.8 l/100km for the manual version and 7.6 l/100km for the auto.
The all-important acceleration figures have not been revealed, although Hyundai tells TMR that buyers can expect a 0-100km/h time in the "low seven-second range".
Pulling the turbo Veloster up is a pair of 300mm ventilated front disc brakes - 20mm larger than on the regular model - and an Australia-specific damper setup is there to keep the performer planted.
The Veloster SR Turbo gets a McPherson strut front suspension package, while the rear features a light-weight V-torsion beam with an integrated stabiliser bar to allow bracing of the arms.
There's also an Australia-tuned motor-driven power steering system and a quicker rack, whipping 2.78 turns lock to lock.
Among the SR Turbo's styling tweaks is a restyled front-end, dropping the body-coloured grille divider of the regular model, along with new foglight bezels and a longer front lip.
At the rear, there's new deep-set reflector housings and a more prominent rear diffuser with circular exhaust tips.
The back-end also gets i40 Tourer-like LED tail-lights, while the profile reveals a new pair of taller skirts.
The Turbo model also gets its own unique 18-inch five-spoke wheel design, and there's the option of matte or chameleon paint, adding $1000 to the price.
Inside, the Veloster SR Turbo is fitted with leather/leatherette sports bucket seats, and Hyundai's satellite navigation system and rear park assist is integrated into the seven-inch touch-screen LCD display.
The system incorporates SUNA live traffic, lane guidance, junction views, speed limits, speed warnings and camera alerts and includes a complimentary three-year NAVTEQ MapCare plan.
Safety features include Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which integrates the Motor Driven Power System (MDPS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Traction Control System (TCS) to provide enhanced directional stability.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist System (BAS) are also standard.
Six airbags are fitted as standard, along with a reverse camera built into the tailgate handle, displaying its image on the seven-inch centre screen.
