Opel's much-heralded return to Australian shores - this time with its own branding - will be made up of three models: the Corsa, Astra and Insignia.

For Australia, the Corsa range consists of three models and two body styles, all powered by the same 1.4 litre naturally-aspirated four cylinder engine.

Sold here in an earlier life as the Holden Barina, the Corsa is the smallest of the trio. In Australia, it will do battle in the fiercely contested light-car segment dominated by the likes of the Yaris and Mazda2.

The line-up will kick off at $16,490 for the manual three-door, topping out at $20,990 for the automatic five-door.

The Corsa is offered with one engine and, depending on specification, two transmission options.

The 1.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine produces 74kW at 6000rpm and 130Nm of torque.

Transmission choices including a five-speed manual transmission, or the optional four-speed automatic.

Opel says the manual three-door manual hatch will reach 100km/h in 11.9 seconds, with fuel consumption listed at 5.8l/100km.

The four-speed automatic will hit the ton in 13.9 seconds, and lists fuel use at 6.3l/100km.

Suspension is composed of McPherson struts up front and a compact torsion-beam rear axle.

The Sport pack, available on the three-door 'Colour' specification, lowers and stiffens the suspension, and adds 17-inch gloss-black alloy wheels with 215/45 tyres.

Features

1.4 three-door Hatch

The entry level three-door hatch is equipped with comfort front seats, matt-chrome finishes, air-conditioning and cloth-covered seating.

Steering-mounted stereo controls look after the seven speaker stereo system and are standard in all trim levels.

On the outside, there are front fog lamps, daytime running lights, black-painted roof and body-coloured mirror caps.

The base level rolls on 15-inch steel wheels with 185/65 tyres and comes with a full-size spare.

All Corsas boast a 5-star Euro NCAP rating courtesy of dual front airbags, curtain airbags, electronic stability control, front seatbelt pretensioners, traction control, ABS and Opel's pedal release system.

1.4 Colour Edition three-door Hatch

The second-tier Corsa adds the options of automatic transmission and the Sports Pack.

Standard additions are sport seats with colour-coded stitching, cruise control, leather steering wheel, trip computer and alloy pedals in the manual.

The matte chrome finishes of the base model and Enjoy are replaced by piano-black trim and colour-coded vent surrounds.

The exterior additions are chrome exhaust tips, gloss black roof and mirror caps and dark bezel headlights and darkened tail-lights.

The Colour also upgrades the wheels to 16-inch alloys with 195/55 tyres or 17-inch alloys with 215/45 tyres on the Sports pack.

1.4 Enjoy three-door and five-door Hatch

The third tier Corsa Enjoy is available as either a manual or automatic and in three or five door bodystyles.

Air-conditioning is replaced by climate control and the interior reverts to the more restrained matt-chrome finishes of the base model, as well as comfort seating with active headrests.

The five door has the Flex floor in the boot (also seen in the Astra), an adjustable boot floor to provide either a flat loading area when the rear seats are folded down or to lower the floor to provide maximum storage with the seats up.

The optional Technology pack adds projector headlights, adaptive lighting and auxiliary turning lighting. Opel claims this as a first in this class.

The pack also includes rain sensors, rear parking sensors and auto-dimming chromatic rear-vision mirror.
