Hyundai's Veloster Turbo flagship is nearing its Australian debut, but already reports are firing that a hardcore new R-Spec version is in the works.

While the current turbo model delivers a hefty 152kW of power - a full 50kW more than its regular stablemate - reports out of the US suggest the R-Spec will be more powerful and more track-focused.

No source for the information is offered, but US website Motor Authority reports that the largely untouched suspension package in the Turbo is a hint that a more intense model is coming.

Along with an enhanced suspension package, the so-called Veloster Turbo R-Spec may also bring more power.

Look either for enhancements to the existing 1.6 turbo engine, or a switch to the 204kW turbo 2.0 litre petrol engine driving the overseas Optima 2.0T sedan and the new Hyundai Santa Fe.

Hyundai's earlier HND-3 concept - the Veloster's inspiration - was also driven by the earlier naturally-aspirated 2.0 litre Theta engine, producing a more sedate 107kW.

For now, Australian buyers can look forward to the arrival of the Veloster Turbo next month.
