Mercedes Benz's next Sprinter update has been caught hot-weather testing ahead of its imminent debut for the 2013 model year.

The new van is expected to get a new nose, bringing it in line with the smaller Renault Kangoo-based Citan.

Changes include LED daytime running lights, new headlights, grille and bumpers.

The interior should come in for a modest quality upgrade, with new styling, new technologies and new materials.

The next all-new Sprinter is several years away, so don't expect too much to change on the engine or transmission front. Updated powertrains and new emissions and fuel-saving technologies will likely feature, however.

Internationally, the Sprinter can be had with petrol, diesel and compressed natural gas engines, and can also be specified with four-wheel-drive

It also has a long list of safety features compared to many commercial vehicles.

The Sprinter is currently produced in three countries - Germany, China and Argentina and is also sold under the name Freightliner in the US where it is enjoying some success.
