The current IS sedan and convertible have just a year or two left in them, but this alleged convertible IS F (on what appears to be company plates) has caught our attention.

These spy shots show a pumped and spoilered IS F convertible touring the streets near the Nurburgring, with just the Lexus badge half-heartedly taped up. The IS F's stacked exhaust pipes can also be seen at the rear.

Rumours of such a beast have been circulating for some years, but this is the first time anything concrete has been spotted.

There is, however, the question of why Lexus would invest in an F version of the current IS convertible, when it is unlikely to have more than two years left in its lifecycle.

Spy snappers have reported that while it looks like the current generation IS F on the outside, the underside is a different story.

Shots of the convertible raised on a hoist (see gallery below) reveal rear suspension parts apparently lifted from the next Lexus IS.

This is not something Lexus would do for the current model, so the smart money is on this being a mule for the next-gen IS line with a distracting - and headline-generating - body over the top.

We'll keep an eye on things, but we're confident the current IS convertible won't get the 5.0 litre V8 treatment. The next one, however...
