Volkswagen’s European range of T5 commercial and passenger vans has been expanded, with the availability of two new drivetrain options.
Available locally in Transporter, Caravelle, and Multivan form, the update sees the Bluemotion tech package available on TDI340 models for the first time, along with the addition of a low-pressure version of the venerable 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine.
The Bluemotion package consists of low-rolling-resistance tyres, cruise control, start/stop technology, and regenerative braking. Until now, the Bluemotion package has only been available on lower output (European-only) versions of the single turbo 2.0 litre diesel engine.
Volkswagen claims that the package reduces fuel consumption by 0.5 l/100km (European cycle) across all TDI340 driveline options.
Current Australian T5 models with the 103kW, 340Nm TDI340 engine are rated at 8.2 l/100km (ADR 81/02 combined).
The new low-pressure 2.0 litre petrol engine produces 110kW and 280Nm, compared to the 150kW and 350Nm available in Multivan TSI350 as the only current local petrol option.
Based on official European consumption figures, the lesser-powered version improves fuel consumption by seven percent.
There’s no word yet on whether these updates will be reflected in Australian models, but watch TMR for further details.
