Ford's popular SYNC infotainment system has come to Australia at last, announced for the newly updated Focus range that hits showrooms in August.

The revised line-up, now produced in Thailand, also introduces the new Active City Stop collision-avoidance system, and fuel economy improvements in certain models.

Importantly, pricing of the strong-selling Focus range remains largely unchanged, with only the Titanium models increasing.

Improved fuel economy

The Focus range now features active grille shutters, along with improved engine under-shielding and wheel deflectors.

Thanks to these drag-reducing additions, fuel consumption in Trend and Sport models powered by the direct-injected 2.0 litre petrol engine, and equipped with a manual transmission, has fallen from 7.2 l/100km to 6.6 l/100km.

Diesel models also mark a slight improvement, falling from 5.5 to 5.4 l/100km.

Active City Stop

Available as part of the optional Sports Executive Pack with the Focus Titanium grade, Active City Stop monitors the road ahead for stationary traffic, braking automatically if it detects the vehicle in front has stopped unexpectedly.

At speeds up to 30km/h, Active City Stop also scans the area ahead of the car for possible obstacles.

If the system determines that a collision is likely, the brakes are pre-charged. If the driver remains inactive, making no steering or braking changes, the car applies the brakes automatically.

Ford SYNC

Ford's SYNC infotainment system, developed with Microsoft, has been a strong part of the Ford line-up in the US market. Now, with the updated Focus, it has arrived in Australia.

In its Australian specification, SYNC offers automatic contacts-downloading from your mobile phone, making them available through voice commands.

The system offers control of your phone through voice recognition, allowing calls to be answered via the steering-mounted controls, and outgoing calls to be made by voice.

The voice recognition also works with the USB/iPod/Bluetooth/aux-compatible music system, and it is also possible to listen to text messages read out loud from your phone.

The satellite radio function, popular with overseas version of SYNC, is not available with the Australian system.

Other Updates

Other updates to the Focus range include active grille shutters, ECO mode, body-coloured door handles and new 16-inch wheel covers, all standard with the entry-level Ambiente model.

The Trend model picks up a rear Trend badge, while the Sport picks up a rear-view camera, new alloy wheel design, new Sports Styling kit and a Sport badge at the rear.

The Trend model continues with its existing optional extras pack that includes auto headlights, auto wipers, auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror and follow-me-home lighting.

The Sport model's sports suspension, sports front seats, dual-zone climate control and navigation all carry over.

The top-shelf Titanium also adds a rear-view caera, along with leather-trimmed seats, a new Sports Styling kit and new Titanium badge at the rear.

Standard equipment on Focus Titanium includes Active Park Assist, Ford Smart Key keyless entry system and Ford Power start button, satellite navigation and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Focus Titanium is also available with the $2300 Sports Executive Pack, which adds Active City Stop, adaptive cruise control, bi-xenon headlights, and a powered tilt/slide sunroof.
