It's not the usual sort of update, but Honda's all-new 2012 Civic sedan is now on sale in Australia, again.
Listed as the 2012 Civic Series II, the new models arrive as repairs to Honda's flood-affected factory sees production return to Thailand, after a short-term supply arrangement with Japan.
The change means the VTi entry-level badge is back, with the VTi-L name returning to the middle of the range. There is also the VTi-LN (adds satellite navigation) and the Sport, while the Civic Hybrid continues unchanged.
“Over 3400 Civic Sedans have already been sold since the all-new model was launched in March this year. Australians can expect superior quality, even more features and exceptional value for money,” Honda Australia General Manager for Marking and Sales, Stephen Collins said.
As before, the VTi, VTi-L and VTi-LN are powered by Honda's 1.8 litre i-VTEC petrol engine, producing 104kW and 174Nm of torque.
The VTi is available with five-speed manual and automatic transmissions, while the VTi-L and VTi-LN are available with the automatic only.
Features on the new entry VTi include 15-inch steel wheels with a temporary spare, along with keyless entry, cruise control, power windows with driver’s auto up/down, four speaker audio, USB, iPod and aux connectivity, Bluetooth audio and Hands Free Telephone with steering-wheel mounted controls, Motion Adaptive EPS and the Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID).
The VTi-L adds auto on/off headlights, chrome gear shifter and 16-inch alloy wheels with a temporary spare.
Moving to the VTi-LN, there is satellite navigation with a reversing camera, along with front fog lights, smart entry, chrome door handles and rain-sensing wipers.
Honda's 2.0 litre i-VTEC four-cylinder drives the Sport variant, delivering 114kW and 190Nm of torque.
For the 2.0 litre engine, available with the five-speed auto only, fuel consumption is significantly improved. Where the same engine returned 8.4 l/100km in the outgoing model, the new model lists figures of 7.5 l/100km.
Features for the Sport include 17-inch alloy wheels, sunroof, leather steering wheel with paddle shifters and turn indicators on the door mirrors.
The Civic Hybrid remains unchanged, powered by a 1.5 litre petrol engine paired with Honda's tweaked Integrated Motor Assist system, producing a combined 82kW and 172Nm.
Honda says the revised IMA system will deliver more go under hard acceleration than before, recharging the lithium-ion battery pack through both the engine and the regenerative braking system.
All Series II Civics have a five-star ANCAP safety rating with six airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist.
